NEW RIVER CAMP, KAYAK, CANOE & TUBE

Join us for a relaxing weekend camping right beside the New River in North Carolina. You can walk from the campsites into the water! To take a look at the campgrounds, go to: http://canoeingthenew.com/
The campground is a three-hour drive from Raleigh, near Sparta, North Carolina, and the temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler than Raleigh. Campsite 31, 32, 33 and 34 are reserved for our group.
Canoes and kayaks are optional (and an additional cost). Let the Coordinator know AS SOON AS POSSIBLE whether you are coming and if you would like a canoe or kayak reserved for you. PLEASE NOTE YOU WILL PAY THE CAMPGROUND FOR YOUR KAYAK OR CANOE — the Coordinator will just reserve them for you.
The canoe/kayak trip will be a five-mile no-rapids trip departing at 11:00 on Saturday. Prices listed below include transportation to the drop off point, paddles, and life jacket.
Canoe $45+tax (two people could split the price)
Kayak: $28+tax. If you bring your own kayak they will shuttle you to drop off for $15.
Tubing the river $15.00/person - Includes the tube and transportation to the drop off point. Tubes area also available to use as "cooler tubes" for your beverages, etc., for $5. (Please be aware that if the water is low, tubing can be a very long trip.)
A tentative schedule of events is:
Friday: Everyone arrives – set up tents — wade in the river — sit around the fire. Everyone provides their own dinner. (There are restaurants in Sparta if you want to eat out).
Saturday 11 a.m.: Canoe or kayak trip down the river (5 mile trip takes 2.5 to 4 hrs (4 if the river is low). Take your lunch/snacks/beverages.
Saturday and/or Sunday 12 p.m. or 2 p.m.: Tubing for those who want to be dropped off at the low-water bridge and float back to camp (take refreshments)
Saturday Dinner: POTLUCK
Things to bring:
¨ Shoes for wading in the river (This is a must!!!)
¨ Chair for campfire (plus old chair for sitting in the river)
¨ Sun screen, bathing suit, and hat
¨ Lunch, snacks, beverages for the kayak trip. A dry bag might be a good idea
¨ Bring something for a Potluck on Saturday at 6 p.m.
¨ Food for all other meals (or you can eat in Sparta)
¨ Blanket for nighttime and warm clothes for sitting around the campfire – it gets chilly at night!
Location: New River Campground; 6286 US Highway 21 North, Sparta, NC (between Sparta, NC and Independence, VA, at state line of NC and VA). Campgrounds are 195 miles from Raleigh. Contact Coordinator for detailed directions. Please note that most cell phones do NOT work at the campsite, so the Coordinator may not be able to get your call if you need directions. Cost member: $18 per person which includes two nights of camping. (canoe/kayak/tube rental additional)
Cost non-member: $23 (canoe/kayak/tube rental additional)
